The Act prohibits discrimination based on “natural and protective hairstyles”, particularly those associated with race by updating the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include this category. The intent is to end discriminatory practices in employment, housing, education, and places of accommodation based on hairstyle.
This would be a good time to review your handbook and dress code policies. Your EEO policy should include a reference to hairstyle discrimination. And, if you have them, hairstyle specifications should be limited to those necessary to meet safety or sanitation requirements. If a professionalism standard is described, it must not limit the ability to wear those hairstyles typically associated with race.
