A Common Thread: Being thankful for clients who care

When I joined Rose Advisors 12+ years ago, I asked my mentor and insurance industry pioneer, Butch Doerschler -- who is the perfect client? His answer was so simple and clear that it still resonates with me today.  Who was Butch’s best client? It was someone who cared about someone or something other than him/herself.

Over the years, I have quickly come to appreciate a client’s different perspective on all facets of life; from family and business to finances and community.  While clients are unique, one common thread does bind them together: Buying life insurance is a selfless action where someone or something else benefits from your decision to act. As an advisor who wants to make a difference, I am fortunate to have this foundational understanding of my clients - they care about someone or something other than themselves. What a privilege it is to do this kind of work with this type of person!

Our clients care deeply about the following:

• Their Family: A commitment to, and a love of family compel many to buy life insurance to replace income, fund a spouse’s retirement and to pay off debt obligations.

• Their Business: Underneath it all, business owners care about their partners, their employees, their customers and their community. When a business owner or partner buys a life insurance policy, what they are ultimately buying is peace of mind.

• A Charity or a Cause: Whether it’s a community organization, a religious or educational institution or a worthy cause, life insurance can be used to support meaningful work in our communities for years to come

• A Generational Legacy: Sometimes it’s grandparents wanting to fund a grandchild’s educational pursuit or a desire to divide an undividable asset among multiple siblings so that it can stay in the family (think lake cottage or acres of farmland). Other times it’s to better prepare for a federal estate tax liability looming on the horizon where Uncle Sam could become a majority beneficiary of family-wealth without proper planning.  It’s important to note that funds from a properly structured life insurance policy are received by beneficiaries free from taxation (income, capital gains and, possibly, federal estate tax).

At Rose Street Advisors, along with the power of M Financial, we would be honored to help you protect and provide for those people and things you care most about.

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!

Picture your employment posters.  Are they in the employee entrance?  By the coffee pot or in the cafeteria?  You know you love them and willingly fork over the subscription fees for endless reminders that you need to keep them up to date. Well, the bad news is that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) just issued a new poster titled “Know Your Rights” which is intended to replace the “EEO is Law” poster.  Before you run out and buy a new poster set, remember that Michigan’s minimum wage has not yet been completely settled.  Buying that updated, “all in one” poster might need to wait a bit. Fortunately, you can download an updated poster from the EEOC for free on their website at:  https://www.eeoc.gov/poster. You can use this to add to your existing poster and be in compliance. Have an HR question?  We’d love to help!

Did you know that when you restring a guitar, a best practice is to take it one string at a time in order to keep constant, dynamic tension on the guitar at-all-times? Guitars perform best when each string is carefully tuned, living under constant tension. And the tension is REAL! Over the years of playing the guitar, there have been many times that I have broken a string while playing. When a string breaks, it often emits a loud popping noise and throws the whole guitar out of tune. As soon as the new replacement string is installed and tuned to its right note, it usually takes 2 full tunes of every string on the guitar to get the whole guitar in tune and at peak performance. When we meet with clients, we are often invited into the dynamic tension that exists in their personal financial life - trying to wisely balance spending, saving, investing, and giving. We often hear, “how much should I be spending on… Do I have enough cash reserves saved for my level of income and expenses? How are my investments performing? I love to be generous and give some of my money, but am I giving strategically and taking advantage of tax efficiencies?” Each aspect of our financial life affects the other and the tension isn’t easy to maintain. When one part of our financial life gets out of tune, it can affect the whole. Similar to how each guitar string needs to be tuned, for the guitar to perform at its optimal level, the more finetuned each aspect of our financial life is, the more our entire financial life works in harmony to perform at an optimal level as well. Has it been a while since you have had a financial tune up? Would you benefit from a second opinion on your current investment strategy? Let’s chat. It brings our team great joy to meet with our clients and roll up our sleeves to develop plans that provide clarity and action steps to achieve their goals.
